When I posted this round-up of craft ideas on Friday, I knew the first project I wanted to tackle was the decoupage tissue paper mugs. I had never heard of dishwasher-safe Mod Podge, and I definitely wanted to try it out. Instead of mugs, which we have a ton of already, I decided on small plates which could be used as decorative trays or snack plates.
I started by purchasing the following supplies:
- Dishwasher-safe Mod Podge
- Tissue Paper
- Small appetizer plates (I purchased mine at Target for approximately $2 each)
- A small paint brush
To decorate the plates, I cut the tissue paper into different sized rectangles and arranged them on the plate. Once I was happy with the design, I brushed a layer of the decoupage glue onto the plate and then gently placed the first layer of tissue paper. I brushed glue over the tissue paper to cover it evenly and remove small air bubbles and wrinkles. I continued this until all three layers were added, and then I covered the entire top surface of the plate to make sure that the paper was completely sealed against the surface. I let the plates dry overnight.
The dishwasher-safe Mod Podge glue is said to be top-rack dishwasher safe, but the instructions recommend 28 days for curing. I’ll test it out next month and add an update to this post.
